Built for the part of losing weight that nobody plans for
MAINSTAYResistance Trainer
Mainstay Resistance Trainer: four-strand tube with padded foot pedals and a foam handle Close view of the padded non-slip pedal and the safety latch Dimensions: 45cm at rest, 25.5cm base, pedals 11.5cm by 10cm, stretches to 2.5 times Movement guide showing shoulder, waist, leg and seated arm positions

A deficit doesn't only take fat

It takes the tissue underneath at the same time, and that tissue is what holds the shape. Ten minutes of pulling, from a chair, is what keeps it.

  • Works seated. No floor, no getting back up.
  • Starts near nothing and climbs to four strands.
  • Ten minutes, in the room you are already in.

Four strands

Clip them in one at a time. The bottom of the range is genuinely gentle.

Anchors at the heels

Your own bodyweight holds it. Nothing to hook to a door or a chair leg.

Folds flat

25.5cm across the base. Lives in a drawer, not a spare room.

Why two sizes down can still hang wrong

A deficit doesn't discriminate. The body draws from stored fat and from lean tissue at the same time, and lean tissue is what sits under the skin holding the line of an arm or a waist.

That's why the scale can move a long way and the sleeves stay the one place nothing improved. Nothing went wrong. The weight came off exactly as asked, and part of what came off was the part that held the shape.

There is one signal that tells the body to hold onto lean tissue during a deficit: making it pull against resistance while the loss is happening. Walking doesn't send that signal above the waist. Eating less doesn't send it anywhere.

The scale reads the same either way. What came off is not the same.

fat the tissue that held the shape

A deficit on its own

A meaningful share of what leaves is the tissue underneath. The size drops and the outline goes soft with it.

The same deficit, plus ten minutes of pulling

Loaded tissue gets kept. Far more of what leaves is fat, and the outline comes down with the size instead of after it.

Illustrative. The bars show the mechanism, not measured results, and individual outcomes vary.

Ten minutes, sitting down

1Sit and anchor

Dining chair, armchair or the edge of the bed. Feet into the pedals, legs out in front.

2Pull, slowly

Arms, shoulders and waist. Slow down on the way back, that half is where the work is.

3Add a strand

When ten minutes stops being difficult, clip in the next strand. Most people move up every fortnight.

Built so the first rep is possible

The reason equipment fails a person mid-deficit isn't the equipment. It's that the lightest version of it is already too heavy on the day energy is lowest. The smallest dumbbell made is five pounds, and there is nothing underneath it.

  • Four-strand tubeTPR. Strands clip in and out, so the starting load can be almost nothing and the top end still means something.
  • Twist to adjustRolling the handle shortens the working length of the cord, raising resistance without changing strands.
  • Stretches to 2.5×45cm at rest, roughly 112cm fully extended. That range decides which seated movements fit you, see the fit section below.
  • Non-slip pedals11.5cm wide, 10cm deep, padded. Bare feet, socks or shoes.
  • Safety latchThe pedal-to-tube join is the failure point on cheap versions of this product. This one latches shut rather than clips.
  • Folds flat25.5cm across the base. Goes in a drawer.

Where to start

Most people begin lighter than they expect. Pick a number to see what it means in practice.

One strandAlmost nothing, and that's the point. If it's been years, this is the setting where a first session actually gets finished.

Two strandsNoticeable by the end of ten minutes. Where most people settle in the first month.

Three strandsReal work. Arm and waist movements start to feel like training rather than moving.

Four strandsThe top of the range. Roll the handles short from here when it stops being difficult.

The week this is actually for

A dress that finally fits everywhere except the sleeves.

Clothes loose in all the places that were never the problem.

A smaller size on the hanger that hangs wrong on.

What owners said

"I use it every day and have definitely built muscle."

Verified review, after two months

"This is just what I needed to add to my daily walks. A week in, I can already tell a difference in my core, arms and legs."

Verified review

"A very good tool for beginners and pros, because the resistance can be adjusted to one's liking."

Who this is wrong for

Four things owners of this product complain about. All four are true, and none of them are worth finding out after it arrives.

Long legs will run out of cord

45cm at rest, about 112cm stretched. Seated leg-extension movements get tight above roughly 5'9". The arm and waist work is unaffected at any height.

Already lifting? Too light

Four strands is the whole range. If a 20 lb dumbbell is a warm-up, this will not challenge anything. It's built for someone starting or restarting.

The pedal is this category's weak point

Foot straps tearing is the most common complaint across competing versions. The latch is the fix, and it's still the first part to check on arrival.

It replaces nothing you already do

This is ten minutes added to a walk or a deficit, not a substitute for either. On its own it is not a weight loss plan and doesn't claim to be.

Questions

Will this get rid of arm or belly fat specifically?
No, and anyone selling it that way isn't being straight with you. Fat cannot be taken off a chosen area by exercising that area. What this does is different and more useful: it keeps the tissue underneath while a deficit runs, so a larger share of what you lose is fat and the shape comes down with the size.
Does it work if the weight is coming off from medication rather than dieting?
The mechanism is the same either way. Weight lost quickly draws more heavily on lean tissue than weight lost slowly, so the case for loading it while the loss happens is stronger, not weaker. Talk to your prescriber about adding exercise if you're under medical supervision.
I can't get down on the floor. Does that rule me out?
No. Every movement it's built for happens sitting, a dining chair, an armchair, the edge of a bed, feet out in front. Nothing requires getting onto the ground or back up off it.
How hard is it, really?
Adjustable across a wide range and honestly light at the bottom of it. One strand is very gentle. Four strands with the handles rolled short is a genuine effort for most people who aren't already training. Owners who found it too easy had bought the highest resistance expecting gym weight.
How long does a session take?
Ten minutes is enough to count. The reason it works is that it happens on the days a longer session would have been skipped.
Does anything come with it explaining what to do?
Assembly is a single clip and takes under a minute. The manufacturer's movement guide is below. Four positions, and the seated variations are the ones this page is built around. Movement guide showing shoulder, waist and abdomen, leg, and seated arm training positions

The window is open while the weight is still coming off

Tissue that gets loaded during a deficit tends to stay. Tissue that doesn't, tends not to, and it is harder to build back afterwards than it is to hold onto now.
